But the state has virtual monopoly in production of litchi, makhana and honey. Bihar is the leading state in vegetable production and second largest producer of fruits in the country. As a consumer, Bihar with a population of 83 million (2001 Census) and a population growth rate of 2.43 per cent per year is a large and growing market for food products.
Vision 2015 is a timely intervention by the Government of Bihar to create a roadmap for food processing sector in the state and is designed to ‘tap the untapped potential’ of its agriculture sector through accelerated development of its food processing industry. There exists huge scope of investment in the food processing sector where the most promising sub-sectors would be meat and poultry, dairy, fisheries, confectionery manufacture and beekeeping
