About the Author

Charles Dickens was an English writer and social critic. He created some of the world’s best-known fictional characters and is regarded by many as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. His works enjoyed unprecedented popularity during his lifetime, and by the 20th century, critics and scholars had recognised him as a literary genius. His novels and short stories are still widely read today. Among his notable works are: The Pickwick Papers, Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol, A tale of two cities, David Copperfield and Great Expectations. Born in Portsmouth, Dickens left school to work in a factory when his father was incarcerated in a debtors’ prison. To pay for his board and to help his family, Dickens was forced to leave school and work long hours, earning six shillings a week pasting labels on pots of boot blacking. The plight of David in the novel David Copperfield led many readers and critics to regard it as an autobiographical novel. Despite his lack of formal education, Dickens edited a weekly journal for 20 years, wrote 15 novels and hundreds of short stories and non-fiction articles. In the book David Copperfield also becomes a writer. Dickens always said that like many fond parents, he had in his heart a favorite child and that child was David Copperfield.
